Where do I cut off the spent blooms?
Removing spent blooms, called deadheading, is a quick way to tidy up your cannas. Once the petals are past their prime, snip just below the bloom head. You want to remove as little of the stalk as possible. Future blooms are developing within the stalk although you may not see any evidence of it at the time. How do I determine the right amount of water during summer?
Cannas love water during the heat of the summer. While newly planted bulbs (rhizomes) need only a small amount of water before they sprout in the spring, cannas thrive with a significant amount of water while actively growing in the summer. If you are unsure how much to water, use the one-inch finger test. Insert your finger into the soil or dirt one inch and if it feels dry, give your cannas a deep soaking around the base of the plant.
I want to move my cannas to a different location. Can I transplant now?
Yes, you can! Dig your plant leaving as much of the dirt intact and disturbing as little of the root ball as possible. Early morning is a great time to do this. Place the plant into a bucket of water, allowing the water to cover the roots. Leave your plant in the water for two or three days. The plant will LOVE all of the water. Then, transplant in the evening to give the plant the cool nighttime hours to begin adjusting. You may still see some wilting, but these steps will reduce the shock as much as possible. It may take a week or two for your plant to acclimate to the new spot. (Transplanting during cooler months of the year is best for Arizona gardeners.)
