Spring weather, or weather in general, can be so unpredictable!
We always recommend that you wait to plant cannas until your soil temperatures average 60 degrees or warmer. Planting too soon causes cannas to rot in the soil before they have a chance to sprout.
But what do you do if you planted your cannas at the appropriate time and a late spring freeze is in the forecast?
If you have cannas sprouted and have a freeze forecast, you can easily protect your new, tender shoots. Cover your cannas with a lightweight sheet at night. Depending on the height of the plants, you may be able to lay the sheet directly across your flowerbed. If your cannas (and other plants) are taller, you can add a few stakes to keep the new leaves from becoming bent.
The same is true for recently planted cannas, but that have not yet sprouted. Cover your cannas with a blanket to help hold in warmth until the cold snap is past!
If you have cannas in containers, move the containers against your house and gently drape a sheet or blanket over them.
If this does not apply to you at this time, we hope it helps in the future!
