Spring shipping is postponed due to weather. We do our best to stick to your requested ship dates, but we do postpone shipments in the event of extreme winter weather. Overnight temperatures will be in the single digits starting Tuesday, meaning it will be unsafe for your canna rhizomes to be in transit. We don't want your package to freeze en route. All orders scheduled to ship during the week of 2/17 are rescheduled to Monday, 2/24.
Choosing a ship date can be easy. We recommend having your bulbs shipped around planting time. Our preference for determining when to plant cannas is by using soil temperatures. It is safe to plant canna rhizomes outdoors when soil temperatures are averaging 60 degrees F or warmer. We like using this interactive map to tell us soil temperatures. Enter your zip code for the map to show you the current soil temperature, a 5-day average, and historical trends.
February is usually great timing to plant cannas in areas similar to:
Arizona
Southern California
Florida
Southern Texas
These areas are zone 9 and warmer. We look forward to getting cannas to our customers in these areas once temperatures are safe.
Zone 8 gardeners will be next and can usually start planting cannas in mid-March. This includes cities:
Charlotte, NC
Atlanta, GA
San Francisco, CA
Chattanooga, TN
Dallas, TX
Salem, OR
Carlsbad, NM
Our lives here on the farm are dependent on the weather. Precipitation determines whether or not we can be in the field planting, tending, or harvesting. Rainfall, wind, and temperatures impact the success of our crop. Tornadoes and icy roads threaten our family and team at different times of year. Currently, we are unable to ship cannas because of wildly low temperatures.
We all endure the days of less-than-ideal weather spurred onward toward the better ones we know will follow. Long September days when the temperatures start to cool are what Nikki waits for all year long. Dustin loves the occasional drizzly rainy days with gray skies. I, Madison, am happiest when the fields are abloom, the sun is setting, and I get to spend an unexpected evening with my parents.
We hope you are reminded of your happy place today. The best is yet to come!
