We are reminiscing back to April of this year when we planted the fields full of small canna rhizomes, praying they would grow and produce bulbs so that our family business could continue to provide jobs for our employees and cannas to our faithful customers. The last several months consisted of careful monitoring of soil and weather conditions, water, fertilization, walking the rows of cannas to hoe away weeds, and so many more tasks to ensure the best growing conditions possible.
All the while, the cannas were hidden under just a few inches of soil, their size and health unknown to us. The growing plants can give us an idea of whether or not the season is going well, but we don't see the fruits of our labor until harvest begins and we see the bulbs being lifted out of the ground and then unloading onto the conveyor belt to be washed.
Harvest, as always, was dirty. This year it involved more than one season's worth of breakdowns and required a last-minute road trip to St. Louis, MO for a new conveyor belt. Keep reading to see more photos of this year's harvest. To learn more about canna harvest here on the farm, tune into our harvest YouTube video for a more in-depth look.
But, now that all the cannas are out of the ground and safely in the barn, we can breathe easier and enjoy the end of another successful growing season. We want to include you in our end-of-harvest celebration, so we offer you a 25% off sale for two days only on these varieties: Australia, Crimson Beauty, Durban, Grande Red Stripe, Musifolia, and Yellow King Humbert! Shop now, sale ends tomorrow (November 3rd) at midnight!
Thank you for being patient with us during the busy season of harvest. We are officially back in the office and our winter hours have begun. We are open 9am-5pm CST Monday-Thursday, though we will be closed for Thanksgiving.
Thank you for reading, we look forward to next time!
