Amaryllis bulbs are easy and rewarding to grow, producing bold, tropical blooms indoors through winter or outdoors in warm zones. Their large bulbs store plenty of energy for stunning flowers even in their first season.
When: Indoors, plant October to April for winter/spring blooms. Outdoors (zones 9–11), after danger of frost.
Light: Bright, indirect sun indoors; full to partial sun outdoors.
Soil: Loose, well-drained mix enriched with compost.
How deep: Leave the top 1" of the bulb above the soil line to prevent rot.
Spacing: 8–10" apart in beds or one bulb per 6–8" pot.
Tip: Water well after planting, then sparingly until growth appears.
Once growing, amaryllis need regular moisture and balanced feeding for thick stems and repeat blooms.
Water: Keep evenly moist once leaves appear, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings.
Fertilize: Every 2–4 weeks during active growth with a balanced liquid fertilizer (10-10-10). Stop feeding after flowering to allow rest.
Maintenance: Remove spent blooms but keep leaves until they yellow naturally, they recharge the bulb.
After flowering, allow foliage to grow and feed the bulb for next year’s display.
Indoors: Continue light watering and bright light until midsummer. When leaves yellow, cut them back and store bulbs in a cool, dark place (50–55°F) for 8–10 weeks before replanting.
Outdoors: In warm climates, bulbs can stay in the ground year-round; cut back dead foliage and mulch lightly.
Tip: After resting, repot in fresh soil, water once, and place in bright light. Growth resumes in 4–6 weeks for another bloom cycle.
Cold climates (Zones 3–8): Dig bulbs before frost, let them dry, and store in a cool, dark spot until replanting.
Warm climates (Zones 9–11): Leave bulbs in the ground year-round; mulch lightly in fall.
Containers: Bring pots indoors before frost and follow the same dormancy routine.
