Bearded iris are hardy, dependable perennials known for their tall stems, distinctive blooms, and wide range of colors. Fall is an excellent time to plant because it gives the rhizomes time to establish roots before winter while the soil is still warm. The most important thing to remember is not to bury the rhizome too deeply. Bearded iris prefer to sit close to the soil surface with plenty of sun and good drainage. Give them the right start and they can return with larger clumps and more flowers year after year.

When: Fall is ideal, generally 4-6 weeks before the ground freezes. Plant rhizomes as soon as possible after receiving them.

Light: Full sun (6+ hrs) for the best flowering. Bearded iris can tolerate light shade, but too much shade may reduce blooms.

Soil: Well-drained garden soil is essential. Avoid low areas or heavy soil that stays wet. Amend with compost if needed to improve drainage and soil structure. Ideal pH is about 6.0-7.0.

How deep: Set the rhizome horizontally with the roots spread downward and outward. The top of the rhizome should remain at or just slightly below the soil surface. Planting too deeply can reduce flowering and encourage rot.

Spacing: 12-18" between rhizomes, with the growing end or fan facing outward to give each plant room to spread.

Tip: Dig a shallow hole with a small mound of soil in the center. Rest the rhizome on top of the mound, spread the roots around it, then gently backfill while keeping the top of the rhizome exposed or barely covered.

Watering & Fertilization

Bearded iris are fairly drought tolerant once established and generally prefer slightly drier conditions over constantly wet soil. Newly planted rhizomes need regular moisture while roots are forming, but good drainage is just as important as watering. They also do not require heavy feeding. A little attention in spring and after flowering will help keep plants vigorous without encouraging excessive leafy growth.

Water: Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil lightly moist while new roots establish. Once established, water deeply during extended dry periods and allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.

Mulch: Use mulch sparingly around bearded iris. Keep mulch away from the rhizomes so they receive good air circulation and do not remain overly moist.

Fertilize: Apply a low-nitrogen or balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth begins. A second light feeding after flowering can help support next year's blooms. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers.

Maintenance: Remove spent flower stalks after blooming, but leave the foliage in place through the growing season. Divide crowded clumps every 3-5 years, usually in late summer or early fall, to maintain strong flowering.
