Peonies are long-lived perennials that can thrive in the same spot for decades, so taking a little extra care at planting time is well worth it. Fall is an ideal time to plant bare-root peonies because the cooler weather allows roots to begin settling in before winter. Choose the location carefully, give them plenty of sun and resist the temptation to plant too deeply. Peonies may take a season or two to fully establish, but once settled they reward you with bigger, better displays each year.

When: Fall is ideal, generally 4-6 weeks before the ground freezes. Plant as soon as possible after receiving your bare roots.

Light: Full sun (6+ hrs) for the strongest plants and best flowering. Light afternoon shade can be helpful in warmer climates.

Soil: Rich, well-drained garden soil amended with compost if needed. Avoid areas that stay wet or soggy. Ideal pH is about 6.5-7.0.

How deep: Position the root with the eyes (small pink or reddish growth buds) facing upward. Cover the eyes with only 1-2" of soil. Planting too deeply is one of the most common reasons peonies fail to bloom.

Spacing: 30-36" between plants to allow room for mature growth and good air circulation.

Tip: Dig a wide planting hole, loosen the soil underneath and around the root, then gently spread the roots before backfilling. Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil.

Watering & Fertilization

Peonies appreciate consistent moisture while their roots are becoming established, but they do not like sitting in wet soil. Once established, they are fairly drought tolerant and need only occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. They are not heavy feeders either, so a light hand with fertilizer is usually best. Good soil, steady moisture and a little patience will do more for your peonies than frequent feeding.

Water: Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil lightly moist until the ground freezes. In spring and summer, provide about 1" of water per week during dry periods.

Mulch: Apply 1-2" of mulch after the ground begins to cool. Keep mulch away from directly covering the crown and eyes.

Fertilize: In early spring, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or a light layer of compost around the plant. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

Maintenance: Remove spent flowers after blooming and keep foliage in place through summer so it can feed the roots. Cut foliage back after it yellows or is killed by frost. Established peonies generally prefer to be left undisturbed.
